Swine Flu and Its Consequences

Well, we haven’t yet mentioned swine flu on our website, mainly because the media is hysterically covering it everywhere you turn.

Probably the best source for your information would be this site, from the trusted folks at the CDC.

Additionally, it looks like many pigs will be killed as a consequence of fear of this flu (valid or not), and it has already happened in Egypt.

Sassy and Remmy Need a Home!

A message from their owners:

Some of you already know that we have been “fighting” to stay in our house over the last year. We are thankful that we have been given this much time to work out the details of our next step as we thought we were going to have to move many months ago. It has been an absolute rollercoaster. We never imagined being able to stay this long and the mortgage company has dragged this ride out for much longer than we expected. But now the time has definitely run out …and we definitely have to vacate the home. We have the house up for sale for the 2nd time to give it one last shot to avoid a foreclosure. We have been given 2 more months grace to sell it, or leave (third option is to pay the escalating payments & fees which are much, much more than we can afford with our new income). The “workout” plans that have been discussed over the months with our mortgage company have not worked out and we are all out of options. As we seek a suitable and affordable rental home, we absolutely MUST re-home some of our beloved pets. Those of you who know me well know that this is VERY difficult for me! And, you know I will never take them to the pound. But, we have been looking for many months for a home and we run up against a brick wall whenever people find out that we have 5 dogs. Also, as we try to sell this one potential buyers are very turned off to the house with the dogs here so this house is not showing well. With this email, I am seeking to find WONDERFUL forever homes for 2 of my dogs ASAP. I believe I have found a temporary foster home for the other 3. They are much older and have been with me much longer. The 2 on this email are younger and have much life and love left to give to a great home. We have contacted every animal rescue, no-kill shelter, etc. in the area but are told “no” simply because everyone is filled up past capacity already…mostly because people are losing their homes (many animals are abandoned when the owners move).

PLEASE look at the attached pictures and read below about Remington (Remmy) and Sassy. They are full of personality! They are absolutely GREAT DOGS! Even if you are unable to help personally or don’t know of anyone immediately, I am asking that this email be forwarded as far as it can go. So please – forward it to other people and ask them to please forward it too. Keep it going and going – please – until a great home is FOUND for these great doggies. WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Thank you very much. Contact info is below. We will also assist with travel to anywhere if that is necessary!

It makes me so sad to see these 2 precious ones go – as you can see from the pics they are both full of personality. Please, please – if you can place them – make positively CERTAIN that they will be loved and well cared for – and not left outside all alone or in a dangerous place or anything like that.

Sassy – approx 5 years old / female / spayed / vacs up to date / mixed breed / funny, silly, loving, loves to run, chases butterflies / very smart – instinctive / rescued from side of the road / would make a great family dog – especially with other non-aggressive dogs. Always “happy” / loves to play and be outside – with option to be inside in bad weather, etc. Communicates to you with her very unique and funny coyote like “howl”!

Remington – approx 3 years old / male / neutered / vacs up to date / chocolate lab / very loving, gentle, loves to be around people, used to be timid about stairs and new things but is much more confident now / wants to please – always happy to see you / rescued from neglectful home / would make a wonderful family and house dog – especially after just a few basic obedience classes…he is still young and eager to be with you so keeping him in “sit” and “stay” is not quite there yet.

The Restoring Our American Mustangs (ROAM) Act, H.R.1018, is a crucial federal bill that reinstates protections for wild horses and burros from commercial sale and slaughter. H.R. 1018 will be brought up for a vote in the House Natural Resources Committee tomorrow!

Your U.S. Representative, Paul Broun, is a member of this committee and is in a critical position to support this legislation. This is your chance to help restore vital protections for the majestic symbol of our American west, wild horses.

Congress originally passed the Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act in 1971 to protect our wild horses, but in 2004 this protection was gutted. In a midnight maneuver by then-Senator Conrad Burns (R-Mont.). He slipped a few unnoticed lines into a massive spending bill, overturning 30 years of protections for wild horses. It’s time to win these protections back!

TAKE ACTION
Please call your U.S. Representative, Paul Broun at (202) 225-4101, to urge support for H.R. 1018 to protect our nation’s wild horses and burros.

You can simply say: “As a constituent, I urge you to support the Wild Horses and Burros Bill (H.R. 1018), restoring the protection of wild horses and burros from commercial sale and slaughter. This bill will be voted on in committee this Wednesday and I hope that I can count on your support.

Thank you for taking action on this important legislation, and for all you do for animals.

Sincerely,

Mike Markarian

Just wanted to take a minute to showcase my foster kitty, Cheeto. She is from the Madison, GA hoarding situation we posted about a while back. While she came timid and malnourished, we are making awesome progress and she is turning into such a sweet and loving girl! Dakota Needs a Home!

UPDATE: YAY! Dakota’s owner is taking her with him!! He writes:

I've decided over the past couple of days that
I am taking Dakota with me to NY.  I've found an organization that is going
to help transport her for me.  I just couldn't leave her behind.

A great decision that we can all support!

NOTE: UGA Law SALDF does NOT support people leaving their animals behind when life takes them other places (Would you leave your child behind??) but we want to help get the word out so that these animals can find a good home.

From: Keith Sherwood <Keith.Sherwood@macys.com>

I am moving to New York in the next week and need to find a special family for my dog. Unfortunately I cannot take her with me and need a permanent home for her. Below are some pictures and info on her. If you know of someone that is looking for a special dog, please let me
know. My phone # is 404-790-2351. I need to find a place before I leave next Thursday April 30.

Name: Dakota
Breed: Black Lab mix
Weight: 30-35 lbs
Age: 10 yrs old
Has been fixed
House broken – she’ll let you know when she needs to go out. She does well on a leash.
Demeanor: Doesn’t bark a lot, gets along with smaller dogs and cats (She’s never been around a larger dog, so not sure how she’ll react).
She is good around kids, but she’s not very active.
