World’s Ugliest Dog Winners Unveiled

Sunday, June 28, 2009

PETALUMA, California —  A prominent under-bite, scrunched face and floppy ears are the hallmarks of a winner.

The winner of the World’s Ugliest Dog contest, that is.

Pabst, a boxer-mix rescued from a shelter by Miles Egstad of Citrus Heights, California, won the annual contest on Friday at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Northern California.

It was an upset victory for Pabst, who beat former champion Rascal, a pedigree Chinese Crested.

Pabst’s owner took home $1,600 in prize money, pet supplies and a modeling contract with House of Dog.

Miss Ellie, a blind 15-year-old Chinese Crested Hairless, won the pedigree category.

Uniform Code of Military Justice May Add Animal Cruelty as an Offense

Uniform Code of Military Justice may add animal cruelty as an offense

A recent public hearing held by the Commission of Military Justice in Washington last week suggested adding language to specifically address the issues of animal cruelty in the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Animal cruelty is a felony in more than 30 states, and a misdemeanor in others, but no consequences specifically exist for servicemen stationed overseas.

The Uniform Code of Military Justice, or the UCMJ, is the military code of law which seeks to create a consistent set of laws and code of conduct for all members of the armed forces. It spells out what behaviors are not acceptable and the consequential punishments for minor and major offenses. Most offenses are covered with very specific language like False Enlistment, Failure to follow orders, Disrespect toward a superior officer, Murder, Stalking, Operating a vehicle under the influence, etc. Even check bouncing is covered under the UCMJ as “Making, drawing, or uttering check, draft, or order without sufficient funds” with its own set of consequences in the military justice system. One item that is not currently covered under the UCMJ is neglect and cruelty toward pets (military working dogs are covered specifically as they are US Military property).

Nowhere in the UCMJ is there any language to suggest that animal abuse is behavior unbecoming of a serviceman. Article 134 of the UCMJ is a catch-all article that is commonly used to address offenses not specifically listed in the code and charges of animal cruelty can, in theory, be brought upon a serviceman using this article. However, the charges would have to be brought by a superior officer who felt that the charges were worth his/her time.

Article 134. General article:
Though not specifically mentioned in this chapter, all disorders and neglects to the prejudice of good order and discipline in the armed forces, all conduct of a nature to bring discredit upon the armed forces, and crimes and offenses not capital, of which persons subject to this chapter may be guilty, shall be taken cognizance of by a general, special , or summary court-martial, according to the nature and degree of the offense, and shall be punished at the discretion of that court.

Though the details of the proposed animal cruelty article are yet unknown, it may likely address not only issues of direct abuse/cruelty toward animals but also charges of animal abandonment when servicemen change stations and leave pets behind with no caretaker. This issue is complicated, however, by bans on certain breeds of dogs on all US Army bases as well as some Air Force and Naval bases. If animal abandonment is addressed as a crime, as it should be, it sends a mixed message to servicemen who do the right thing: adopt an animal and intend to keep it for the rest of its life, no matter what their own lives throw their way. If the UCMJ wants to send the message that abandoning an animal is wrong, and it is, it should also understand that with the bans on certain breeds of dog (regardless of the individual dog’s temperament) soldiers are receiving mixed signals: Animals have worth and value and must be treated appropriately…. but we do not value certain breeds.

Yogi Needs A Home!

Hi, our family recently purchased a black standard poodle puppy He’s adorable and doing very well for not being even 3 months old. He’s had a few basic training classes so knows sit and down (w/ treats). He’s sleeping in a crate through the night and goes about an hour before having an accident. He was born 4/1.

We’re trying to find him a better home then ours because being the 3rd dog in the house, even though he’s a poodle, he’s sent my allergies over the edge. We bought him for Jack, but Jack has learned that being a dog-owner is more than he had expected.

I paid $350, and he’s had his first 2 rounds of shots. I will give him away but if his new owner would like to donate anything towards that, I would greatly appreciate it. He’ll be 12 wks tomorrow and weighs 17 lbs. He is due for his 12 wk shots, but I was a week late for his 8 wk shots so was going to wait another week for his 12 wk. Ones.

I’ve attached a picture of him. We’ve named him Yogi, but he doesn’t know his name yet!

Pharaoh Needs A Home! Or Donations!

Poor sweet Pharaoh just can’t catch a break.  Despite it all, he is just as sweet as can be!  First, as a puppy he ends up with a family that doesn’t bother to take him to the vet for the most basica vaccines or any other veterinary needs. Then, at the young age of just  8 months, they decide they don’t want him anymore and dump him at a local shelter.  Cherokee County Humane Society took sweet  Pharaoh into our program on Monday with the hope that finally, he can get his life on track.  He got neutered and up to date on all vetting. He was then diagnosed with luxating patellas!!  The hope is that this problem can be managed with supplements and not surgery but we haven’t even had a chance to find out if that will work b/c by Thursday, sweet Pharaoh was diagnosed with Parvo.  Parvo is costly to treat but this boy has so much heart we just couldn’t decline treatment, we just knew we had to give Pharaoh a chance!!  Can you help Pharaoh?  Had his first family only taken the time to take him to the vet as a puppy, he wouldn’t be fighting for his life right now……..

Donations to his costly Parvo treatment are needed and appreciated. Any amount helps!!

Donations to his treatment can be called in directly to the vet (Allatoona Animal Hospital, 678-445-1111, CCHS Acct #1241), made via Paypal or by check.  Please please let me know if you can contribute to his care at wittle13@yahoo.com and how you would like to help!

Hopefully sweet Pharoah will overcome this newest obstacle and be able to find a loving permanent home

Thanks so much !

AFP reports China is drafting its first law to protect animals from abuse, which could see serious violators end up in jail, state media reported.

The draft, which will be published in August to solicit opinions from the public, covers violations such as abusing and abandoning pets, the English-language Global Times said.

Severe violators could be sent to prison, while lighter punishments would include fines and detention of fewer than 15 days, according to the report. It did not specify the jail terms that might be applied under the law.

CORRECTION Wayward Sea Lion

Which way to Bay? Baby sea lion rescued on freeway

By SUDHIN THANAWALA, Associated Press Writer Sudhin Thanawala, Associated Press Writer Mon Jun 22, 10:29 pm ET

SAN FRANCISCO – A baby sea lion wandered onto a busy San Francisco Bay area freeway Monday morning but, after a ride in the back seat of a police car, was safe and resting at a marine center later in the day.

Drivers on Interstate 880 started calling authorities around 5:45 a.m. to report the animal “walking” in the center divider near the Oakland Coliseum, said Peter Van Eckhardt, an officer with the California Highway Patrol.

He said the sea lion likely reached land from a nearby San Francisco Bay estuary and crossed the roadway in the middle of the night.

The animals do wander onto Bay area roadways from time to time, Van Eckhardt said. A male sea lion was found waddling on a busy street in Richmond in May, but died from malnutrition.

“It definitely happens on occasion,” Van Eckhardt said. “This is pretty off the beaten path for them to come in this far.”

An Oakland police officer driving near the coliseum Monday morning loaded the small, grey-coated sea lion into the back of his patrol car and took it to an animal control center, Van Eckhardt said.

Several officers later tried to get the animal, nicknamed “Fruitvale” for the Oakland neighborhood where it was found, into a cage, but it jumped underneath the patrol car. The pup eventually was rounded up and taken to The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, a nonprofit facility that helps sick and injured marine animals. Jim Oswald, a spokesman for the center, said the animal is active and alert but slightly malnourished.

“I’m sure it was pretty traumatic to go through what (it) did today,” Oswald said. “(It) seems to be doing fine.”

Veterinarians wanted to give the animal a chance to rest, but they plan to undertake a more thorough medical evaluation Tuesday, Oswald said.

The center has seen a spike this year in the number of weakened and malnourished sea lions found along the Northern California coast. In a recent week, staff at the center rescued 10 more sea lions a day than usual.

Experts say the increase could be caused by a drop in the number of smaller fish that younger sea lions rely on for food while they are developing.

Anyone know  a kind soul that would be willing to take on a lab whose is pregnant on a short term basis?  She will be going to NC in July.  I think you can follow the emails below and can vouch for Janie that she not going to dump the dog on you.. Thanks for your forwards and any suggestions.

Good morning, Ladies –

Sweet Heidi is getting close to delivery.  She remains at a vet’s office in Jackson, Georgia, where  I have been boarding her since pulling her from a Monticello shelter last Thursday.  I just learned yesterday that she is pregnant.  Sheila Fielding, my local contact buddy with Pawsitive Cause Pet Rescue, I are trying desperately to find her a foster home locally for her to deliver pups and remain comfortable until I arrange transport for her and pups to Henderson, North Carolina on July 21 to Merri Mahoney, who is with Lab Rescue CT and has agreed to take Heidi and her pups (Merri knows pregnant mommas and pups and whelping, the whole 9 yards).  The thought of Heidi delivering alone, at night, in a kennel…

Would appreciate any and all assistance!

Thanks!
