Missing Dog ‘Muffy’ Returns Home to Family After Nine Years

Thursday, July 30, 2009

A flea-bitten dog rescued from a squalid Melbourne, Australia, backyard is to be reunited with her ecstatic owner nine years after she disappeared.

3

And 17-year-old Chloe Rushby, who was only eight when her furry friend disappeared, can’t wait to have Muffy back in her arms.

Chloe and her family screamed with joy when the RSPCA called to say Muffy was alive – much older, very scruffy and 1,250 miles away in Melbourne.

“It would be fair to say that they were extremely elated and extremely excited by the call,” RSPCA inspector Gail Coulter, who found an emaciated Muffy after an anonymous tip, told The Daily Telegraph.

“They were initially shocked and confused, but when we mentioned the name Muffy – which is part of the microchip information – and gave them a description of her, they knew it was their pet lost so many years ago.”

What happened in between is largely a mystery.

The fluffy white bitser is known to have been kept in a filthy back yard for the past two years.

Police: SC man charged with having sex with horse

By JEFFREY COLLINS

The Associated Press

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A South Carolina man has been arrested for having sex with a horse after police say the animal’s owner caught him on surveillance camera.

Police say this isn’t the first time 50-year-old Rodell Vereen has been charged with buggery — last year he pleaded guilty to having sex with the same horse and was placed on the state’s sex offender list.

Police arrested Vereen on Monday, when he returned to the stable 20 miles northeast of Myrtle Beach where owner Barbara Kenley says a camera caught him having sex with her horse earlier this month. This time she was waiting for him with a shotgun and says she thought about shooting him but didn’t want to go to prison.

Vereen is in jail. His brother says he has mental problems and may not have been taking his medicine.

Whale Saves Drowning Diver, Pulls Her to Surface

Wednesday, July 29, 2009

A beluga whale saved a drowning diver by hoisting her to the surface, carrying her leg in its mouth.

Terrified Yang Yun thought she was going to die when her legs were paralyzed by crippling cramps in arctic temperatures. Competitors had to sink to the bottom of an aquarium’s 20-foot arctic pool and stay there for as long as possible with the beluga whales at Polar Land in Harbin, north east China.

But when Yun, 26, tried to head to the surface she struggled to move her legs.

“I began to choke and sank even lower and I thought that was it for me – I was dead. Until I felt this incredible force under me driving me to the surface,” Yun said.

Beluga whale Mila had spotted her difficulties and using her sensitive dolphin-like nose guided Yun safely to the surface.

‘Miracle’ Mac survives 40ft cliff drop

By STAFF REPORTER

Published: 28 Jul 2009

THIS plucky pup is taking his first steps to recovery after plunging 40ft off a cliff — with the help of specially made “doggy splints”.

Cute Mac, an 18-month-old golden retriever, broke both his legs and punctured a lung after dropping the height of THREE double decker buses on to rocks.

The playful pooch had been chasing a rabbit along the cliff top but misjudged his speed — and went straight over the edge.

2

Mac survived the fall but owner Margaret Sills, 65, feared her beloved pup would never walk again.

He spent two weeks in intensive care and needed around-the-clock care from a team of dedicated vets.

But Mac stunned experts by miraculously pulling through, less than three weeks after the accident.

And he is now starting to walk again after experts inserted metal plates into his front legs, and supported them with specially-adapted wooden splints.

Retired personal assistant Margaret, from Somersham, Cambs, hailed Mac as her “walking miracle”.

She said: “I still find it hard not to cry when I talk about it.

“He is the most amazing dog. Even on the rocks at the bottom of the cliff as soon as he saw me his little tail started wagging.

“I couldn’t believe it when he went over but I was even more shocked he survived. We didn’t even realise there were cliffs behind the bushes.”

The incident happened on July 10 when Margaret took Mac on a ten-day holiday to the Isle of Wight.

The grandmother-of-seven said of his recovery: “It’s going to be a long haul and hard work.

“I have already spent £1600, and another £100 for every week he is in splints. It’s going to be one hell of a bill at the end.

“But Mac is well worth it.”

Anyone who is interested in this sweetie, please contact b.lchu@comcast.net

Jack was handed off to a stranger in the parking lot of Walmart.

jack

Luckily, that stranger was a good person. The man told her that he was going to have to bring him to the pound the next day, and didn’t want him to be euthanized. The lady he gave Jack to was in the process of moving, and had no business taking a dog. But she did. She cannot keep him however, so he must find a new home.

The lady says that the ideal home for Jack would be adult(s) with or without pre-teen to teenage children. She has no idea how he’d do with younger children, but will need someone who really wants to play with a dog because he is so energetic. Ideally, he will need a fenced yard, or someone with the time to take him on long walks. He is content to sleep on the floor next to the bed.

Jack has a wonderful temperament: smart & easy to train – was taught to sit in one hour. He knows how to fetch, play tug-o-war with toys, he’s very socialanxious to pleaseloves to play, and loves very hard chew toys.

He is approximately 2 years old20-25 lbs, is a good eater/not picky, is leash and harness trained, and housebroken. Jack has been fully vetted and is Heartworm negative. In a word–he is ready to go!

If you think Jack would make a good addition to your family, please contact: b.lchu@comcast.net

You cheeky monkeys: Safari park baboons ransack cars after learning to break into luggage boxes

By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 11:38 PM on 20th July 2009

A group of tearaway baboons are wreaking havoc on a safari park after learning to crack open rooftop luggage boxes and escaping with visitors’ goods.

Keepers at Knowsley Safari Park have been forced to issue warnings after the opportunistic primates developed a taste for human possessions.

The cheeky monkeys – who are known for tearing off the odd wiper or wing mirror -  have been targeting cars carrying the roof boxes before pouncing on the unsuspecting visitors, who are forced to watch helplessly as their things disappear.

Taco Bell Chihuahua Dies

By Rennie Dyball

Originally posted Wednesday July 22, 2009 11:40 AM EDT

She charmed millions without ever saying a word, and managed to make fast food tacos adorable. Gidget, the Chihuahua best known for her Taco Bell ad campaign, died from a stroke on Tuesday night at age 15.

“She made so many people happy,” says Gidget’s trainer, Sue Chipperton. PEOPLE met both Gidget and Sue at a Hollywood animals photo shoot in February, where the pup was a consummate pro and delighted the crew with her playful nature.

The mostly retired actor lived out her days lying in the sun – “I like to joke that it’s like looking after a plant,” says Chipperton – and entertaining at shoots when her trainer brought her along. “Gidget,” says Chipperton, “always knew where the camera was.”

19 Arrested In Canary-Fighting Investigation

100 Birds Seized In Shelton, Police Say

POSTED: 1:28 pm EDT July 26, 2009
UPDATED: 11:11 am EDT July 27, 2009
SHELTON, Conn. — Police said 150 birds were seized in a canary-fighting investigation in Shelton on Sunday.

Police said canaries and saffron finches were seized and 19 people were arrested at a Ripton Road address.

“There was 100 canaries fighting, and they were betting on them ’til they were dead. It’s absolutely shocking,” said neighbor Marion Sega.

Police said they served a search warrant at the home after receiving a tip that an illegal bird fight involving 150 canaries and finches was scheduled to take place on Sunday.

Canaries are popular beginner pet birds and saffron finches, another small species of bird, can be spiteful and intimidating.

Police said 150 canaries and finches, their cages and $8,000 in cash was seized from the Ripton Road home.

Shelton police said the homeowner and 18 others found near or in the home’s garage were arrested on animal cruelty and illegal gambling charges. They said some of the suspects only speak Portuguese.

“I feel so bad, especially with two young boys and to have that going on in that house,” Sega said. “The house is so beautiful, the people seem so nice and a quiet neighborhood, couldn’t believe what I heard.”Authorities raided a home in Harwinton earlier in the month, confiscating dozens of roosters. Investigators in Shelton said canary and finch fighting may be a new trend about which they are just learning.

“When canaries are bred, they’ll fight to the death and they don’t make the noise that typical roosters make and they don’t smell,” said Sgt. Robert Kozlowski. “They fall under the radar because we wouldn’t think it suspicious if people have a lot of canaries.”

Shelton police said the birds were discovered while executing a search warrant with the help of state police, state animal control, the Department of Agriculture and Fairfield police.

Police said the investigation may spread into other states as well.

Arrested In Investigation:

  • Rogerio DeCarvalho, 25, Danbury
  • Geraldo Teixeira, 43, Kearny, NJ
  • Ricardo Almeida, 29, Danbury
