Good news update: Zipper has been rescued!

Diesel and Hambone Need Homes! by Reagan

I’m writing to tell you about two very sweet dogs who’ve been rescued and are currently living at the vet where I work awaiting adoption.

Diesel, a 2-year-old male, was rescued by good Samaritans who found him left chained-up in the back yard of an abandoned house. Thankfully, Animal Action Rescue stepped up and committed to Diesel’s veterinary care and finding him a home. Diesel had a female companion who was also rescued and has been adopted!… because she is the desirable blue and white variety of pit bull. But Diesel’s beauty is more than skin deep…. he is extremely loving and affectionate despite the hardship he endured in his puppy years. Diesel presses his big block head against his kennel door craving the affection of all the veterinary staff. We think he’ll be about 60-65 lbs at his ideal weight.

Hambone, a 1-year-old male, was found wandering the grounds of Decatur High School and brought to the vet in hopes someone would reclaim him…. but no one came for him. Hambone’s name suits him perfectly because, unlike Diesel’s mild-mannered personality, Hambone is a ham! Instead of pressing his head against the door for attention, Hambone stands up on his hind legs to greet all his visitors. His poorly cropped ears make him look menacing, but he is anything but! Hambone has a taller and leaner build than Diesel but will be about the same weight.

Both of these eligible males are neutered, microchipped and current on all vaccines!

Anyone interested in meeting Diesel or Hambone can come to The Village Vets of Decatur any time during regular business hours (Mon-Fri 7:30am-6:00pm and Sat 8:00-2:00). Just email me at chamblee.abernethy@hotmail.com ….call me at (404) 371-0111 or come in and ask for me at the front desk. www.thevillagevets.com

There is an application, adoption contract and $195 adoption fee to cover a portion of the rescue group’s cost of veterinary care. Check out both dogs’ bios and/or apply on-line at www.animalactionrescue.org.

….also, please help Animal Action Rescue of Atlanta win $10,000 by casting your vote for AAR at www.animalactionrescue.org… it takes less than five minutes!

Dekalb County Animal Control kills an average of 35 pit bulls every week and will not adopt them out of the shelter to Dekalb residents. Ninety percent of the pit bulls who enter the shelter are euthanized, and these dogs account for a staggering 30% of the shelter’s total euthanasia! Sadly, the statistics are similar in all twenty metro-Atlanta shelters.

Please help to draw much-needed attention to the pit bull tragedy by forwarding this message to friends, family, neighbors and co-workers.

Thanks and happy holidays.

Figaro is an adorable kitten here at the pound.  She has been here for a few days and has enjoyed her little play pen in the back room.  I can tell she likes to jump around in her kitty box and is learning litter training. Talking Animals Show by Reagan

From attorney Isabelle Strauss:

Bill Smith–National Expert On Puppy Mills–on Talking Animals Dec. 2
Talking Animals Dec 02 2009 11:30

My guest on “Talking Animals” Dec. 2 will be BILL SMITH, founder of Main Line Animal Rescue in Pennsylvania, and a nationally-respected expert on puppy mills–he’s been profiled in People and featured on “Oprah”–who received the ASPCA’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.

What may be both surprising and fascinating for many about Smith’s expertise, and where it was honed: Pennsylvania’s Lancaster County is considered the puppy mill capital of the United States, and it’s the Amish and Mennonite farmers living in the area who are at the forefront of practicing this dark business.

Bill Smith will speak with us live on Dec. 2, and listeners are invited to participate in the conversation by calling in (813-239-9663) or e-mailing (DJ@wmnf.org)
