What Can I Do?? by Jennifer

What can law students do to support animals and the development of animal law? The obvious answer is to become an attorney who practices animal law, but (realistically) we know that not all people are called into that area of law. No matter what area of law you desire to practice, however, you can still be an animal advocate as a law student (and an attorney) without solely practicing animal law! Here is a sampling of what you can do:

* Join Animal Legal Defense Fund. Your donations will go towards legal advocacy for animals, and you will gain a wealth of knowledge on the state of animal law in the USA!

* Educate people on animal law and its importance, not only for animals, but for humans (link to domestic violence, murder, abuse, etc.).

* Adopt! And encourage your friends and family to adopt (don’t forget to spay/neuter!).

* Fundraise! All animal rescue groups need funding and a simple bake sale can make the difference between life and death since groups can’t pull animals they can’t afford!

* Get involved in Meatless Mondays. While a vegetarian lifestyle keeps money away from cruel slaughterhouses, anything you can do to decrease your consumption of meat/milk/cheese helps!

* Write animal law articles and submit them to legal publications.

* Volunteer at your local shelter.

Anybody have any other ideas? :) Leave your ideas in the comments, then get busy! For the animals!

Hannah

Hannah is a very friendly girl who is ready to be your loving companion. She is ready for attention and enjoys being petted and played with. Although technically not a kitten, she is still very playful and will chase down toys with all her younger buddies. She would probably do best in a home where she is the only cat or where she would have only one or two feline “siblings”. She enjoys being the center of attention.

Summer is here! That means backyard BBQs, swimming pools, no school (for some of us), and family vacations. Many people love to travel with their pets, which means that vacationing requires a whole new level of planning in order to accommodate their animal companions. Make sure to take all safety precautions your pet may require, and plan ahead to find animal-friendly hotel accommodations. For tips and safety information, check out this great article from the New York Times: http://travel.nytimes.com/2011/05/22/travel/what-to-know-when-traveling-with-your-pet-practical-traveler.html?src=dayp

Greyhound Racing on the Decline by Jennifer

Interesting LA Times Article & ALDF analysis of the “sport” of Greyhound racing and its apparent sharp decline in the United States. The article mentions multiple signs of decline, including:

  • In 2001, there were 50 greyhound tracks in 15 states, and now there are only 25 tracks in seven states, with 13 of them in Florida. That state was “once considered the hub of dog racing.”
  • Throughout the country the amount gambled on greyhound races dropped from $3.5 billion to $1.1 billion between 1991 and 2007.
  • There are probably fewer than 300 greyhound farms today, down from as many as 750 in the 1980s, at the peak of greyhound racing.
  • One greyhound track in Arizona once drew 3,000 bettors a day, but now maybe 50 or 60 people per day visit the park.

From PAWS Atlanta, Meet Aztek!

“Aztec is a beautiful husky mix with a ton of energy. He is still a puppy at heart and needs a family who is active and playful. He loves to explore, romp, and be around lots of people. He loves cuddling with his family indoors, but would also enjoy playing ball in your backyard. Is Aztec the right match for you?”

Animal Hoarding Bust in Ohio by Jennifer

Animal hoarding is a vicious form of animal abuse with a recidivism rate of near 100%. Animal hoarding should not be taken lightly by prosecutors and law enforcement since, despite the fact that many hoarders claim to love their animals, they will allow their animals to languish and die slow, tortuous deaths.
