Hi Everyone,
Bobbie Sue was picked up on Monday from a parking deck on campus – she is ADORABLE! She is a bobtail calico with tabby stripes, and her little bunny tail wags when she is happy and excited. A real companion cat, she is very sweet, friendly, and eager for love and attention – even likes belly rubs. She is about a year old, already spayed, and went to the vet’s today for a rabies and distemper vaccine and combo test (negative).

Bobtail calicos are considered very good luck in Japan, and this little girl is hoping her cute little stub tail will bring her some luck in the form of a permanent home.

Her photos are attached (it is so hard to get a good photo of a friendly cat!). Please post this far and wide and contact me if you would like to meet her!
Thanks!

URGENT: Foster Homes Needed in Hoarding Situation

Here is a very important message from Caitlin Torres of Cats on Campus, one of our dearest Animal Allies:

I’m not sure if ya’ll had heard anything about a hoarding situation going on in Hull, Georgia. If not I’ll fill you in. A couple had over 60 cats and dogs in their single wide trailer. They had stopped feeding the animals, and the animals were suffering in all kinds of unimaginable ways. One poor cat had such an intense mite infestation, the mites had eaten out his entire ear canal and then ate their way out of him through his neck. He scratched himself so intensely trying to get the mites out of him, he ripped his own ear off. He is also suffering from renal failure, and at this point is still alive. I myself am fostering 2 baby kittens that were rescued from this couple’s residence. There was a third baby but he sadly passed away a week ago. His two sisters that are still alive have both had serious health issues. Their mother can’t be found. These people have horrifically neglected so many animals. Their behavior is clearly unacceptable, but unfortunately, as of now we can’t find any laws to prosecute them. They were being cooperative with organizations trying to rescue the cats but now that organizations have began trying to rescue the dogs, the ‘owners’ are no longer cooperating, in fact it’s my understanding that they won’t let anyone on their property at all at this point. I believe only 7 dogs have been rescued and they won’t let anyone back on the property to rescue the rest. We know that if we try to prosecute their abuse towards the cats, they will just say the cats were ’strays that showed up’. Unfortunately that annoying ordinance in Athens, that holds people who feed animals responsible as owners, dosn’t apply in Madison County.

Right now we’re looking for foster homes for the large amount of cats that have been rescued. If you know of anyone in your group that might be able to temporarily foster, or if you might be able to post something about volunteer foster parents on your website, please let us know.

Also, more specifically for SALDF, if you guys know of any laws in Hull (which is in Madison County, GA) that would enable us to prosecute and/or get on these horrible people’s property so we can rescue the remainder of the animals, please let us know.

Thank you guys so much, thank you for everything that you do!

Spay/Neuter Adoption Event

Our animal ally, Cats on Campus, will be hosting a Spay/Neuter Adoption Event at at Tate Plaza on Monday, April 27th from 10am-3pm.

They will be spreading awareness about the pet overpopulation issue, puppy/cat mills, and also promoting responsible pet ownership! They’ll have several kittens that will be up for adoption, along with some fundraising—selling catnip toys for Campus Cats and homemade dog biscuits. If anyone is interested in helping with the dog biscuit baking, please let Caitlin know. Sincere thanks and apologies for the people who baked for the original date that turned into a snow day! Movie Night Re-cap!

Thank you to everyone who made our first movie night a roaring success! I think we would all agree that the documentary was excellent, the burritos were delicious, and the company was fantastic!

Many issues/events came up after the film, so here is my follow-up effort:

1. Products that aren’t tested on animals- Here are two good resources:

Skin Deep

Leaping Bunny

2. The recent events at Oklahoma State University vet school will be posted in an upcoming post

3. The Animal Welfare Club at the UGA Vet School is hosting an awesome lunch next Wednesday (sign up here):

AWC Lunch:

The Animal Welfare Club is hosting Dr. Golab on April 8th from 11-1 in room
363. She will be speaking about the AVMA’s new legislation on animal welfare (especially ear cropping and tail docking). Lunch will be SUBWAY! A little about Dr. Golab:

Dr. Golab has a long history of commitment to ensuring the welfare of
animals. As an undergraduate student engaged in biomedical research she
served on a predecessor to today’s institutional animal care and use
committees that protect the welfare of laboratory animals. As a graduate
student at Texas A&M University, she co-founded a student chapter of the
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals as a means of providing
education directed at reducing end-of-semester relinquishments of students’ pets. After graduation from University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in 1991, she provided medical and surgical services, and assisted with policy development, for local humane societies. Currently she serves on several scientific advisory committees developing guidelines and standards for the care of animals used for agricultural purposes. Dr. Golab currently serves as the head of the AVMA’s animal welfare
division.

4. Please be aware of Cats on Campus’s/Cat Zip Alliance’s problems with an Athens ordinance that may prohibit their TNR methods- we will keep you updated on ways you can help and get involved!
Again, thank you everyone for coming. This SADLF chapter is truly blessed to have friends and activists like you on our side!

Volunteers Needed!

Hi Everyone,

Crystal, the Athens Area Humane Society director, just called me to say that the pet food bank will be open tomorrow (Thurs. 3/26) for pick up of free food. She suggested we get volunteers together for Campus Cats and each person can pick up food for two cats, which would be two large bags of cat food. It would be great if we could have several people there to each get a couple bags of food so I can stock up!

Pickup times will be between 3-6 p.m. Thursday March 26th at the Spay Neuter Center in Watkinsville – 1781 Mars Hill Road.

I plan to be there the whole time (I can help carry food to people’s cars and organize!) so if you come by and get bags, they can go right into my van.

Cats on Campus Meeting Minutes
03/24/2009, 4:01 am

From Cats on Campus Secretary Alex Ames (wa121183@uga.edu):

Hey everyone!

- Thank you to everyone who attended the meeting last night-

We kicked things off by discussing our main goals for the semester and ways in which members can help including:

- Fostering: fostering a cat is a really great way to
help out, plus you’ll have a furry little buddy to chill with when your bored. If anyone is interested in fostering you can contact “Abby” from Catzip Alliance adamsabi@uga.edu or Caitlin cmaryto@gmail.com. Usually you’ll only need to foster
for about 4 to 8 weeks. Also for pics of the cats that need fostering you can visit catzip.org

- Transporters: we also really need volunteers to help
pick up the cats from their location (foster homes,
abby’s house, kelly’s house, wherever) and taking
them to the spay neuter center and/or picking them up
from the center and taking them back home. Drop off time is pretty much whenever, and pick up time is by 8am. Its hard for people with full time jobs to do the pick ups which is why student volunteers are a huge help!

We also discussed several fundraising events we will be hosting. One of which is a “percentage night” which is basically where we advertise for people to go to a certain restaurant and that restaurant gives a portion of the profit to the club.

At the animal shelter, the cats are basically locked up in their cages until they are adopted or more often put to sleep. Anyway as horrible as it sounds they never get to come out of their cages unless volunteers come to play and interact with them…which is why we are going to begin going to the animal shelter to give these cats some damn attention! It’s going to be a lot of fun so e-mail Caitlin the times you’ll be interested in going so we can put together some type of schedule.

Well I hope to see everyone soon, have a fun and safe weekend!
Thanks Again,
Alex Ames
Cats on Campus Secretary

Cats on Campus- Help Needed on Monday!
03/02/2009, 12:00 am

Hey ya’ll, We’re still in need of people to help at the Spay/Neuter Event on Monday from 10am-3pm! No one has said they’d come so far, and it’s making me sad :( We’re going to have several cute doggies there, tons of info and flyers, and we’ll be holding a Spay/Neuter and Adoption pledge event.

Every HOUR about 800 cats and dogs are put down in shelters, because there is a pet overpopulation epidemic, there’s simply no room for them and not enough homes. Spaying and Neutering is the single most effective way to reduce the heartbreaking number of pets that are put down in shelters on a daily basis nationwide.

We REALLY need to encourage people to Spay/Neuter their pets! Countless animals lives depend on it, that’s what our event is all about, so please let me know if you’re able to come by our table and help out!

Thanks everyone!
