Let’s Pass Cheryl’s Law!

1

2

I hosted a nationwide conference call with thousands of animal advocates this weekend to announce the winner of the Humane Society Legislative Fund’s first-ever “There Oughta Be a Law” contest. Animal rescuer Cheryl Woodcock of Baldwin, N.D., joined the call, and I gave her the news that her proposal edged out more than 3,500 other entries from all 50 states.

Cheryl’s winning idea: a tax credit for spaying and neutering pets. It’s a timely and innovative proposal that incentivizes personal responsibility and encourages pet owners to do their part to help reduce pet overpopulation.

The HSLF looks forward to working with members of Congress to introduce a new federal bill to promote the spaying and neutering of pets. But we need your help — please make a special gift today to make Cheryl’s winning entry a reality.

“Cheryl’s Law” could become part of the solution toward ending the euthanasia of three million healthy and treatable dogs and cats each year in America’s animal shelters, and reducing the financial burden of animal care and control on local communities.

Help us pass “Cheryl’s Law” and end pet homelessness. Please make a special gift today.

Thanks for all you do for animals!

Sincerely,

They will be spreading awareness about the pet overpopulation issue, puppy/cat mills, and also promoting responsible pet ownership! They’ll have several kittens that will be up for adoption, along with some fundraising—selling catnip toys for Campus Cats and homemade dog biscuits. If anyone is interested in helping with the dog biscuit baking, please let Caitlin know. Sincere thanks and apologies for the people who baked for the original date that turned into a snow day! This is a true story. Three weeks after my wedding and less than a month before law school was about to start, I convinced my husband that we needed two cats I found on Craigslist. Five years old, black and white, declawed and fixed. They were free because the owner was moving to Europe. Less than 24 hours later, we rushed the male cat to the emergency vet. A $500 deposit was required, which I paid. A week later, the bill totaled more than $800.  I wiped out my savings for a cat I had only owned for one day. Would I do it again? I don’t know.  Would you?

Cats on Campus- Help Needed on Monday!

Hey ya’ll, We’re still in need of people to help at the Spay/Neuter Event on Monday from 10am-3pm! No one has said they’d come so far, and it’s making me sad :( We’re going to have several cute doggies there, tons of info and flyers, and we’ll be holding a Spay/Neuter and Adoption pledge event.

Every HOUR about 800 cats and dogs are put down in shelters, because there is a pet overpopulation epidemic, there’s simply no room for them and not enough homes. Spaying and Neutering is the single most effective way to reduce the heartbreaking number of pets that are put down in shelters on a daily basis nationwide.

We REALLY need to encourage people to Spay/Neuter their pets! Countless animals lives depend on it, that’s what our event is all about, so please let me know if you’re able to come by our table and help out!

Thanks everyone!

Help Needed!

The Athens Area Humane Society needs more funding for feral cat spays/neuters. If you are willing to donate, please contact Lauren Miller, Forgotten Friends president, at laurenjo@uga.edu . It takes just $35 per cat!

Volunteer Opportunities with Cats on Campus

Below you will find some volunteer opportunities with one of our Animal Allies, Cats on Campus. If interested, contact Caitlin Torres at cmaryab@uga.edu.

1. DOG BISCUIT MAKING!-  We need people to help make dog biscuits, from the comfort of their own homes, that we can sell at our Spay/Neuter Promotion Event. It’s a really easy way to help out that dosn’t involve getting off the couch much. Email me if you’re interested and I’ll send you the recipe!

2. TRANSPORTATION FOR SPAY/NEUTER PETS!- Lauren from Forgotten Friends has set up a really fantastic program providing pick up and drop off service for people who want to get their pets spayed/neutered, during the month of February, but don’t have a way of getting them to the vet. If you’re interested in helping pick up and drop off pets, please
contact Lauren at: UGAForgottenFriends@gmail.com

3. DISTRIBUTE FLYERS!- A huge part of what we do involves educating and promoting spaying/neutering. Lauren from Forgotten Friends has a fabulous flyer that we’re trying to get posted everywhere and anywhere, promoting Spay/Neutering. I’m attaching the document and we ask, if you can, print off some, and post them wherever you can think of, your gym, hairdresser, grocery store, etc (just make sure you ask permission first!) When the time comes for our Spay/Neuter event, we’ll also be looking for volunteers to hand out fliers in person there!
